HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS-RESPONSE PLAN
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS-RESPONSE PLAN
It is company policy to stop or delay construction activities, 24 to 48 hours prior to landfall
depending on the project’s geographical distance from our closest shop/yard. The only
exception would be for any activity related to prepping or securing the job site for the coming
storm.
Requirements of our hurricane preparedness property maintenance ordinance for site
protection include:
• Clean up all construction debris,
• All construction materials, must be secured, stored, or removed so as not to create a
safety hazard.
• Materials stockpiled on top of any structure under construction must be permanently
installed. However, if such installation cannot be completed before the storm, then we
must:
o Tie or band together all construction materials and mechanically fasten them to
the top of the structure in such a manner, so a threat of becoming airborne during
a tropical storm or hurricane is not experienced.
o Remove the construction materials from the top of any structure (if applicable)
and mechanically tie them down to the ground.
o Remove the construction materials from the job site; or
o Store the construction materials inside a protected structure.
• Interiors of structures under construction must be secured to prevent materials from
becoming airborne,
• Commercial containers and portable toilets must be removed from a construction site or
mechanically secured to the ground.
• Piles of dirt, sand, and stone on a construction site shall be located away from the canals,
right of ways, adjoining properties, swales, culverts, and inlet grates.
Other precautions include ensuring batteries are reliable in all essential tools – including cell
phones. Our industry depends on cell phones and other wireless communication devices to
coordinate hurricane preparations and clean up after the hurricane passes. Reliable batteries are
vital for getting back to normal on the job. Make sure to fill up gas tanks in all vehicles and
equipment that might be needed to secure or escape job sites. If there are valuable items that
must remain at the site, take photographs for insurance purposes before leaving.
