METAL WELDING AND CUTTING

Metal welding and cutting are duties that are performed daily by LMK Pipe Renewal workers.

The following sections are safety procedures, health hazards related to specific metals, and

protective equipment that each employee is to be aware of when welding and cutting metals.

Eyes

Welding can cause serious damage and discomfort to your eyes. Employees welding metal can

experience "Flash" feelings, which are like sand in your eyes. It comes on about four (4) to eight

(8) hours after the employee or other worker looks directly at the welding process without eye

protection. The "flash" lasts about 24 hours and is extremely uncomfortable. The infrared rays of

the welding arc may even be strong enough to cause permanent eye damage.

All welding areas should be shielded to prevent others from looking directly into the welding

area.
